Red Foods May Lower Prostate Cancer Risk

The best way to beat prostate cancer is to prevent it in the first place. While this isn’t always possible, there are measures men can take to lower their risks of developing this disease. One of the steps men can take to potentially lower their risks is to incorporate more “red foods” in their diet. Specifically, foods containing lycopene have been shown to have possible preventative effects.

Researchers have found that lycopene can lower men’s prostate-specific antigen numbers and may also lower their risks of developing prostate cancer itself. Lycopene is found naturally in a number of foods that are considered part of a healthy, balanced diet. The highest lycopene-containing foods include tomatoes, apricots, watermelons and guavas. Some studies have also indicated that lycopene taken in supplement form may also have similar effects in lowering PSA levels.

An estimated 180,000 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer this year alone. It is estimated that 26,000 American men die from the disease annually. Men will find that risk factors for the disease include age, ethnicity, family history and certain lifestyle issues, such as poor diet and lack of exercise.
